Exactly three years have passed to this day when a paramedical student was sexually
assaulted on the ill- fated day back then and died 13 days after the crime, triggering a massive public outrage. ‘Nirbhaya Chetna Diwas, a public event had been organized by women’s and citizen’s groups at Jantar Mantar to mark the date and pay homage to the fearless soul on Wednesday, 16th December 2015.
Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother, displayed a spirit of extraordinary courage when she
announced the real name of her daughter as ‘Jyoti Singh’ before a massive gathering and said that she wasn’t ashamed to name her daughter, rather those who commit such
heinous crimes must hang their heads and not the victims or their families.
Adding to the infamous day, Nirbhaya’s parents, Asha Devi and Badri Singh Pandey also made an appeal that the juvenile convict who was the most brutal of the six offenders and is scheduled to be released on 20th December was a threat to the city and must be imprisoned for life.
