Asmita Sarkar who is associated with CPI(ML) backed student organisation AISA has been declared as the candidate for the post of Assistant General Secretary at the Arts faculty In Jadavpur University, Kolkata in the upcoming students’ union elections. She is the first lesbian candidate to contest student elections in West Bengal. She is a second-year student of sociology and Vice-President of Jadavpur University unit of All India Students Association(AISA).She aims to fight for rights of homosexuals.

Here is an interview of Asmita taken by Meghna Mehra of Aapka Times
From Burdwan to First LGBT Students’ candidate, how was your journey?
I came out when I was 12, it was very easy to come out that well from the place I belong to. Initially, along with the school level, I never opened up due to the structure of the society and people out there, in a small town. But as soon as I came to Kolkata, I found a lot of people like me, supporting me, and then with the passage of time in the first year of year of JU, I opened myself as a lesbian.
Tell us about your realisation as a member of LGBT community
The realisation was natural to me, I felt that I am inclined towards girls and not guys. According to the society, I could never open up or Frankly tell people about my sexuality.
As a students’ leader, what do you think will be your biggest challenge?
Challenges are the people, the people who think that homosexuality is abnormal would be the hindrances, for whom it would be necessary to make up their mind that homosexuality is not against nature.
In a society of heteronormativity, what are the struggles according to you that LGBTQ+A community have?
They are pointed out as unnatural. They undergo several verbal cases of abuse. .And so on
How was your organisation’s reaction to your realisation of sexuality?
They were very supportive and they gave me the platform to struggle.
What keeps you motivated?
I myself keep my mind motivated against the heteronormativity Of the society. And certain other people who belong to the community even inspire and motivate me.
What will you take as first step for LGBT community after winning elections?
I would try to prepare regular interactive seasons for the Lgbt community within the campus.
In the admission form, there must not be any distinction if the person belongs to the third gender. There must be a transgender cell for the transgenders within the campus. And would try to organise mass movements within and outside the campus to scrap 377.
If there is one message that you want to give to Students’ community, what it would be?
The one message is that your sexuality cannot be dictated by BJP RSS, ManuSmriti or the Society, it is your own part which you should love.

IIMC student suspended

A student of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) has been suspended over “sweeping statements” made by him in support of an academic associate of the premier media school who was sacked recently and for “provoking” his batch mates over the same.

Rohin Kumar, the student of Hindi Journalism department, was suspended and declared out of bounds from the campus on January 9, pending proceedings of the institute’s disciplinary committee.

IIMC Director General KG Suresh told PTI that no institute of merit can tolerate such “sweeping statements” and that the student had “crossed the limit”.

“He was also trying to provoke other students. We suspended him for having prima facie violated the code of conduct of the institute. We have not rusticated him. How can a student pass a verdict on what is a sub-judice issue?” Suresh asked.

He was referring to sacked teacher Narendra Singh Rao’s case. Rao has recently moved the Delhi High Court against the decision.

When contacted, Rohin denied having made any defamatory post online, saying he was at a loss over the decision, especially considering that IIMC was a media institute.

“For me, it’s been only a while in IIMC but I have been writing in online media for long. I wrote taking all facts into consideration and stuck to basics of reporting. I do not know what warranted this extreme action. Even the guards have been given my pictures so that they can stop me from entering the campus,” he said.

Last year, controversy had rocked IIMC when Amit Sengupta, a senior faculty member of the institute, resigned alleging that he was “targeted” for supporting the protests over Dalit student Rohith Vemula’s suicide and JNU and FTII issues.

Later, it had ordered the expulsion of a student from its hostel for three weeks for posting “offensive and “insulting” remarks on social media against students belonging to the SC and ST community.  In the wake of the incidents, the I&B Ministry had recommended the creation of a social media policy.

Accusations of indiscretions by VCs of AMU and Allahabad University, HRD Minister to conduct investigations

Newly appointed HRD Minister Prakash Javedkar has proposed the set-up of an enquiry against the vice chancellors of Allahabad University and Aligarh Muslim University in front of the President. Allegations of financial, administrative and academic irregularities had been made against the two universities, and HRD Ministry couldn’t take the risk of not attending the complaints.

Zameeruddin Shah

After the approval of the proposal against Zameeruddin Shah, VC of the Aligarh Muslim University and R L Hangloo, VC of Allahabad University, an explanation would be expected why the complaints of academic and administrative indiscretions have not been attended by them.
Lt Gen (Retd) Zameeruddin Shah appointed by the UPA government recently had been the center of controversy on his appointment as Vice-Chancellor after BJP member questioned the selection of army and IAS officers as Vice Chancellors.

The appointment of Prof Hangloo as the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University was made by President of India during Irani’s tenure as HRD Minister. Vice- Chancellor has slammed growing “political interference” in the administrative matters of several top universities.

Pranab Mukherjee’s approval is awaited but now, HRD Ministry is determined to find and do justice whether these allegations are true or not.
