“Moral values are instilled in children by their mothers. If mothers are literate, children would certainly prove to be an asset for society and the country”, said Mr. C. D. Mittal, Chairman, Shrimati Urmila Mittal Memorial Trust, New Delhi while addressing the students at a scholarship distribution ceremony organized by the office of the Dean, Students’ Welfare, Aligarh Muslim University.
Mrs. Urmila Mittal Memorial Trust has launched an impressive scholarship programme for the undergraduate and vocational courses girl students of the AMU. This year, the Trust has selected 93 students of different courses, especially science, medical and engineering, for granting valuable educational aid.
Addressing on the occasion, Mr. Mittal urged the people to respect other religions and come up to promote education in society. He said that he did not have a girl child but he was fortunate to have these girls as his own children. Mr. Mittal also celebrated his 73rd birthday on this occasion.
In his presidential remarks, Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah said that the empowerment of women is a core issue and it can be achieved only through female education. He said that Mrs. Urmila Mittal Memorial Trust’s initiative will go a long way in empowering women.
Lt. Gen. Shah said that girls’ performance in academics was commendable and results in various departments proved they had an edge over boys. He said that AMU was sincerely working in promoting female education and soon a new Hall of residence will be in place to accommodate about 1500 girl students.
The girl students who have been selected for the scholarship after a written and oral test include nine from Commerce, 11 from Agricultural Sciences, 4 from Management, 13 from Engineering, 5 from Unani Medicine and 51 from Vocational and Diploma in Engineering courses. Students pursuing degree courses will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 2000/- per month while Rs. 1500/- will be given to students doing a vocational or diploma course. The scholarships will go to the bank account of the recipients through direct transfer.
Earlier, welcoming the guests, DSW Prof. Anis Ismail expressed gratitude to the Mittal Trust for offering scholarships to meritorious girl students. Assistant DSW, Dr. Sheeba Hamid conducted the programme.
