When the ‘betas’ did what ‘netas’ couldn’t..

It is a popular dialogue from a superhit Hindi movie “Don’t underestimate the power of a common man”. Well, it seems like the residents of 11 villages in Haryana’s Sirsa district have taken it seriously enough to build a bridge all by themselves. We need governments in democracy to pay heed to people’s problems and needs. The people of Sirsa have proved that if the governments don’t show up on time, the people will. So when politicians and bureaucrats ignored the requests of the residents to build them a bridge over the Ghaggar river so that they could reach Sirsa town with their farm products much faster, the villagers teamed up and collected Rs. 1 crore. With it, they funded a 250 foot long, 14 foot wide bridge connecting Aleeka and Panihari villages with Sirsa. The work started in April, 2014. Today the bridge is near completion and the 25 member committee which is supervising the construction has requested local saint, Mahant Brahm Dass to inaugurate it. Haryana netas have been kept out of the inauguration. Residents say they have no place for politicians or beaurocrats in their list of invitees. Once completed the bridge will be a lifeline for 1.25 lakh people as it will cut the distance from their villages to Sirsa town by at least 30 km. The people have set an example and have proved that all we need is a strong collective will to change the discourse. The Betas of Haryana have done what the Netas couldn’t !
