Smriti Irani’s fake degree row : Court will pronounce the order in the case on October 18

The educational qualifications of Union Minister Smriti Irani are something which is haunting her again and again. This time she is back in news with some more action hovering around. There is no sign of relief for Ms. Irani in the case filed by freelance writer Ahmed Khan against Smriti Irani regarding contradictory affidavits filed by her about her educational qualifications.

The Election Commission on Saturday submitted the required document in Patiala House Court relating to Union Minister Smriti Irani’s educational qualifications and will pronounce the order in the case on October 18. The Khan lawyer substantiated his appeal by stating that Ms. Irani in 2004 Lok Sabha elections stated her educational qualification as B.A. from Delhi University (school of correspondence) while for Rajya Sabha nomination papers from Gujarat in 2011 she stated B.com, Part 1 (correspondence course) from Delhi University as her highest educational qualifications.

Ms. Smriti Irani if caught in deliberately giving incorrect details could be punished under provisions of the IPC and under section 125A of the Representation of the People Act (RPA) which deals with penalty for filing false affidavit and entails a jail term of up to six months or fine or both.
