Ram Nath Kovind: All you need to know about the 14th President of India

Former Bihar governor Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday was elected as the 14th President of India. He was the NDA’s presidential candidate and won with over 7 lakh votes against Opposition candidate Meira Kumar. Kovind, 71, is a Dalit leader and will take oath as the 14th President of India.

Here is all you need to know about him.

He was born on October 1, 1945 in Kanpur Dehat of U.P. He comes from a very low profile and modest background and has struggled his way to the top of the country’s political pyramid. He is married to Savita Kovind since 1974 and has two children.

He studied law from Kanpur University and went on to become a very successful lawyer. He practiced law uptil 1993 and held various positions like central government counsel in Delhi High court (1977-79), standing counsel at supreme court (1980-93).

In his 12 year stint a an MP, he was a part of many committees including Rajya Sabha House Committee, SC/ST Welfare Committee, Home Affairs Committee and Law and Justice Committee.

Not only that, he has contributed immensely in academic field too. He is on the management board of Dr. B.R Ambedkar University Lucknow. He also serves on the Board of Governors, IIM Kolkata. He has also worked for uplifting education in remotest parts of Uttar Pradesh.

After his tenure as a Rajya Sabha MP, he was sworn in as 36th Governor of Bihar in August 2015. He replaced West Bengal Governor Kesri Nath Tripathi. He resigned the day he was declared NDA candidate for President in June 2017.
