#OccupyUGC Agitation: Jamia students join the stir

Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi:

The Occupy UGC Agitation has reached the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia,New Delhi. Students of the minority central university came out in support of students across India who are protesting against the scrapping of ‘non-Net fellowship’ to M.Phil and P.hd programs by the central government. Earlier, the University Grants Commission had issued a notification to stop funding for students who are pursuing research but have not cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET). This announcement was soon followed by protests and agitations across the country.

Hundreds of students in Jamia Millia Islamia joined this nationwide protest on today November 4. Students of Jamia Millia Islamia decided to take out a peaceful protest march today from the faculty of Fine Arts to Faculty of Engineering from 1PM onwards. Jamia Millia Islamia’s students protested under the banner of Jamia Students’ Forum and All India Students’ Association.

Prof. M S Bhatt, secretary of Jamia Teachers’ Association(JTA) on behalf of the forum extended their support to this movement and addressed the gathering. He appreciated the students and encouraged them to fight for their rights. “This is not only about the fellowship but they are selling education to the corporates” said Shehla Shora, Vice-President of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU).

Representatives of Jamia Students’ Forum, Imraan Khan and Meeran Haider also addressed the gathering and asked them to remember the history of Jamia Millia Islamia of its foundation during the Non-Cooperation movement. AISA activist, Amber Fatmi appealed the students to join the protest march in large numbers from UGC to MHRD at 1 P.M.
