Meet this Jamia student winning medals against all odds

Those who have a firm belief in themselves, they reach out to stars and outshine others. Meet Munna Khalid a final year student of Masters in Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia. What makes him distinguished and our campus celebrity is his ardent passion for badminton. Munna is from Khanpur, a town in District Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. From past five years Munna is studying in JMI, during which he has represented University on national level and won prizes. His distinct calibre, spirits and undying mirth despite being differently abled has inspired many in and outside the campus.

Munna when narrates the story of his passion, he starts from the day at hostel where he was refused by his hostellers to play in the court.

“People used to think that it won’t be worth to play with me as they have to show sympathy towards me why playing and they could not enjoy the game.”

Since then Munna has taken the charge of his life. He started his practice in Jamia’s Stadium where he improved and competed so well he was praised and encouraged to move out to compete. He learnt the moves and tactics of the game from Youtube, he observed and practiced. In the year 2015 he played first time at state level, he recently represented Jamia Millia Islamia at the 4thNCR Zonal Special sports meet ‘Spandan’17. He has won first prize in the competition. Despite endless constraints financial and non-financial Munna has made every proud through his fervor and determination.

Here is an excerpt of an interview of Munna Khalid with Asna Azhar.

What is the thing that keeps motivated that you have able to achieve laurels in your life?
The thing was my seniors in hostel. They played daily but they never gave me a chance to play. So I thought that I have to work hard and play with seniors. So I started to play in complex and make my coach as Youtube.

What perils you faced while you were proposing yourself for a national level competition?
I belong to a middle class family so I faced financial problems. Because I had no financial support with anybody. Now,I’m independent.

How did you keep yourself up despite all odds?
I worked hard and harder. I make a schedule of time morning to sleep. And followed it 1-2 years and I give home tuitions also so I could

Since you are a campus celebrity, how would you trace your journey in Jamia from a student to campus celebrity?
I came to Jamia in 2012. When I don’t know nothing about the sports and I was very shy. After starting I joined theatre and the teacher was Adnan bismillah sir taught me a lot. And Jamia provided me the required things as well as some employees supported me too as to assist me in improving my skills for the game. I’m lucky that I am a student of JMI.

What are your future prospects as a social worker and a player?
As a social worker I want to work with disable people and I want empower them to know their capacities…And a player I want to play international level and I want won medals for India and my target is Tokyo Olympic 2020 But I have no support so I need sponsors also.
