Know Your College: Lady Irwin College

Lady Irwin College is the constituent college of University of Delhi established in 1932. It is women’s college and located in New Delhi-110001, Sikandara Road.

This college is established with the moto “Vidya hi Sewa”. The college has an illustrious ancestry and was established under the patronage of “Lady Dorothy Irwin”.

The college has a glorious history. Among its founding mentors were eminent national and international leaders such as Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu, RajkumariAmritKaur, Kamla Devi Chattopadhyay, Sir Ganga Ram Kaula, the maharani of Baroda, Maharani of Bhopal and Margaret Cousim.

The buildings of the college campus have been classified and protected as heritage sites.  The college shifted to its current campus at Sikandara Road in 1938.From 1950, the college was managed by the All India Women’s Education Fund Association, after that it got affiliated to the DU.

The college has always provided headship to other institutions in the nation in teaching, research and extension in Home Science both at central universities and Home Science Colleges.

Admission Procedure

The college follows the same admission rules and guidelines along the reservation policy (27% OBC and 22% SC/ST) for all the courses as by the University. 3% are for physically disabled candidates with 40% disability, 5% for CW category (reservation for armed forces).

The college laboratories and classrooms with projection facilities. The renovated well stocked college library is fully computerised providing access to national and international online databases.

The centralised computer centre, one of the first in Delhi University, maintains internet connectivity and is a key resources for computer based learning.

The equal opportunity cell provides assistance to students with disabilities in their coursework. Large sections of the college have been disabled friendly. The college has established following facilities like: Classrooms with ICT facilities, Library, Canteen, Computer Resource Centre, Hostel, Placement Cell, Student Centre, Centre for Post-Graduation Studies.
