International Day for Persons with Disabilities observed in AMU

ALIGARH November 28:

The Disability Unit of the Aligarh Muslim University organized an orientation programme to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities falling on December 3.Dr. Abdul Hamid Fazili, Coordinator, Disability Unit said that this day is being celebrated every year on December 3 after it was decided by the United Nations in 1992 to observe the day accordingly.

Dr Fazili said that main objective is to spread awareness amongst students with disabilities and encourage them to enhance their way of life disregarding the social stigma towards them.Dr Fazili said that the AMU Vice Chancellor has approved the adoption and implementation of the provision of Persons with Disabilities Act 1995 and all the students with disabilities have been exempted from all type of fees in the University.

Dr Bilal Ahmad Kutty, Counselor and Placement Officer informed the students about the significance and importance of this special Day and urged them to hold meetings with fellow students to increase awareness among other students thereby making AMU disabled-friendly. He said that this year’s International Day theme, “Inclusion matters: Access and Empowerment for People of All Abilities” will help generate awareness amongst common people about the rights of disabled.
