Hundreds of AMU Students arrested during #RailRokoAndolan to demand justice for missing JNU student;Later released

AMUSU TAKE A STAND FOR NAJEEB

The Aligarh Muslim University Students Union took a bold step today by organizing Rail Roko Andolan in solidarity with JNUSU to give the authorities a wake up call regarding Najeeb’s disappearance. To pressurize officials to look into the injustice done against Najeeb and his family, the AMUSU leaders- President Faizal Hasan, Vice President Nadeem Ansari and Secretary Nabeel Ansari along with Naghma Shareef, Ilma Hasan and Utba Israr Sheikh of WCSU, lead the march from the university library and canteen to the Aligarh Railway Station. But the protest was disrupted midway at the Aligarh church where the police and RAF detained the students and started lathi charge.

In the face-off between the protestors and officials that followed, water guns were used to curb the enthusiastic crowd. As a result many students took a blow and were seriously injured. They were rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) and the protest could not be completed. About 400 students were flocked to the Aligarh jail where they were held by the authorities.

Members of the Students’ Union believe that the action of the government agencies against their protest is clearly in violation with their fundamental rights. The AMUSU members reiterated that although today’s campaign was stalled by the police, the message of the students’ community against despotic rule is crystal clear- We will not sit silent in the face of injustice.
