JNU’s assistant professor had been exempted of his services for sexually harassing a foreign scholar.

Been counted with the highest rate of sexual harassment cases among the 104 higher education institutions, according to the University Grants Commission (UGC) data, JNU has countered a face off yet again. Jawaharlal Nehru University’s assistant professor for Sociology had been exempted of his services for sexually harassing a foreign scholar. The decision was taken in August when the matter came to the fore, yet the final decision was taken on Monday, 21st December 2015, after an emergent meeting with the University’s Executive Council (EC) which culminated at a note that the research scholar who was working under the professor had allegedly been sexually abused by him. An inquiry was also instituted by the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH). Having found him guilty, an action was recommended against him by the GSCASH which eventually was followed by an EC meet. The EC decided to terminate the services of the accused with immediate effect.

JNU, unfortunately has a count of 25 cases of sexual harassment in the year of 2013-14. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) also reported JNU to rank the highest in terms of cases regarding sexual harassment. Such high rate of cases, as claimed by critics and GSCASH representatives, is the result of JNU itself “encouraging” the registration of such incidents at large.
