HRD Minister inaugurates Girls’ Hostel in Jamia Millia Islamia

The Union Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the newly constructed, 5-storeyed, New Girls Hostel, named after the legendary freedom fighter, Begum Hazrat Mahal in the Jamia Millia Islamia campus.

The cabinet minister stressed on women’s empowerment and said that about 100 years ago it was impossible for girls to get an education. This resulted in “the country losing out enormous potential as today, we see women not only participating but excelling in various fields”. Talking on the issue of access to education, Mr. Javadekar said that it was a matter of concern that even today more than 75% of the youth are unable to enroll for higher education. He said that there was a need to correct this trend. He further added that the government is not only encouraging greater industry-academia linkage but also allowing start-ups from single hostel rooms precisely to tap this young energy and ideas of the youth, who are the country’s future.

Referring to Jamia Millia Islamia’s long history, which he said was comparable with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), as all the three institutes were set up at a similar time to impart ‘national education’ despite the colonial rule which never sought such a role for education in India.

He also shed light on the facilities being provided to the students of Jammu and Kashmir by the Central Government under the Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme, he said that since the Modi government took over, the scheme has stabilized. Earlier, there were only 2 supernumerary seats for students from J&K in institutions outside the State but now with the number going up to 10, there is a sizeable number of students who are availing this scholarship, which amounts to nearly 2 lakhs per student per year. Communicating his satisfaction on Indian colleges aggressive execution in International Ranking of colleges he said that the way that it has climbed from 71 to 36 was encouraging.

 Vice- Chancellor of  Jamia Millia Islamia Prof Talat Ahmad gave an overview of the university’s progress and said that Jamia was increasingly becoming a research intensive university. He cited that in the last two years it has secured prestigious research projects including the Centres with Potential for Excellence In particular Areas (CPEPA) Award and the Visitor’s Award for Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics.
