Highlights of 2nd day of Jamia’s Cultural Festival “MIRAAS 2014

Jamia Millia Islamia organises a 3 day Inter University Cultural Festival “MIRAAS 2014″ The second day sees three major events lined up for the day.

BOL- The National Tri-Lingual Debate
The members of the organizing committee, especially the Debate Club, were completely geared up to begin second day of the National Inter-University Festival with BOL-The National Trilingual Debate to be held in English, Urdu, and Hindi languages. The topic for the debate was “This House believes that Social Media has brought about social change”

The event was inaugurated by Shri. Vijay Vidrohi (Political Editor ABP NEWS) at the M.A. Ansari Auditorium at 10a.m. today. The three debates have collectively had the highest participation in its three year history, 5o institutions from across the Nation including Aligarh Muslim University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Lovely Professional University, Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (Bhopal), G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, and Indian Institute of Mass Communication.

The debate in Urdu was the first of the debates and 8 teams participated in the debate speaking for and against the motion. These teams included teams from AMU, JNU, DU, and JMI. The Urdu debate was chaired by Prof. Obaidur Rahman Hashmi (JMI) and judged by Prof. Habibullah Khan (JMI), Dr. Akhlaque Khan (JNU) Dr. Arjumund Ara (DU) This was followed by the most important and aggressive segment of the debate, the English debate, which stretched for more than 2 hours, this was the longest event in MiRAAS 2014. There were 20 teams that participated in the event.  The audience was enthralled by the oratory skills of the speakers. There were a few speeches that raised controversy in “the House”. The audience applauded well in appreciation of the speakers and the judges praised all the speeches. The session was chaired by Prof Shameer Hassan (AMU) and judged by Dr. Baran Farooqui (JMI), Dr. G. Srinivas (JNU) and Dr. Ahsa Khare (IGNOU).

The final segment of the debate was the most awaited session of BOL, the debate in Hindi, with 19 participating teams. The session was chaired by Prof. Iqtidar Md. Khan (HOD Islamic Studies JMI) and judged by Shri O.P. Niazi (All Inidia Radio), Shri Bhupesh Kohli (Anchor Sahara Samay), and Shri Jainendra Kumar (Correspondent ABP NEWS). The session witnessed a thrilled audience with goose bumps. The participating teams made a long lasting impact on the audience. The event brought us close to the final segment of the day.

Creative writing competition
The creative writing competition was conducted at the Nelson Mandela centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution at 2:30 pm.  The competition was trilingual and held in Hindi, Urdu and English. Dr. Arshad Ikram from the Department of Education Studies adjudged the entries in English. Dr. Khalid Javed from the Dept. of Urdu and Dr. Chandradev Yadav form the Dept. of Hindi were the judges for Urdu and Hindi respectively.
Participants were given an hour to write on the topic “Something Amiss” (Kuch khoya hua sa). The parameters judgement was of vocabulary and creativity. This event, like all others in MiRAAS witnessed a wide range of participation from institutes across the country.

Mimicry Competition
Due to unforeseen circumstances the tri-lingual debate stretched longer than its predicted time leading to delay in the commencement of the mimicry competition which started at 6pm. By which time the M.A. Ansari auditorium was packed beyond its holding capacity with audience seated on the alleys and spectators standing shoulder to shoulder beyond the gates.

From among all the events of the second day, this competition drew the loudest cheers from the crowd. While some participants chose to mimic politicians and movie stars, some of them touched upon social issues and others discussed the contemporary political situation .Thus, giving the judges a tough task of decision making. The competition was adjudged by Shadan Ahmed, Javed Ibrahim and Dr. Danish Iqbal.
The day was wrapped up by rock, jazz and folk performances of bands and students from Jamia Millia Islamia. Avataran, the rock band from the Department of Architecture, Jamia Millia Islamia thrilled the audience with their rocking performance followed by wonderful performances by the students of Music Club, Jamia and the concluding performance by Iqbal, Jamia alumnus (well known singer in Jamia specially for song Dil ka Alam ).
