Guide to admission in MA Convergent Journalism at the AJK MCRC in Jamia Millia Islamia

New Delhi: Masters in Convergent Journalism started as a two year Post graduate diploma in Convergent Journalism at the AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre in Jamia Millia Islamia in 2005. Later, due to an overwhelming response to the course, it was turned into a Masters Degree programme in 2007. The AJK Mass Communication and Research Centre is one of the most prestigious and top ranked institute in India in the field of Mass communication and journalism.

MA in Convergent Journalism is designed in such a way that every element of present day journalism is taught in the course. The course is sub divided into four genres, print, photo, radio and video journalism.  Video journalism is a major element in the course that not only includes News packages but also includes documentary making and video editing. Apart from these major subjects, students have to produce a research paper by the end of the course.

Notable Alumni

Some of the famous alumni of the Masters in Convergent Journalism are Syeda Afifa Khatoon (News 24, Ramnath Goenka Awardee), Neha Dixit (freelance at Outlook and The Wire) and Saahil Menghani (CNN-IBN) among others.

Seats and Reservations

There are 20 seats in the programme. 50 % of the total seats are reserved for Muslim Minorites i.e. 10 seats are for the General category, 6 seats are for the Muslim Category, 2 seats for Muslim Women and 2 for Muslim OBC and ST. There is a separate reservation of 2 seats each for the Kashmiri Migrants and the candidates from Jammu&Kashmir.

Who can Apply?

Any candidate who has done graduation or Bachelors degree course in any discipline with not less than 50% marks is eligible for the course.

Scheme of Entrance Exam

After the registration for the course there is an admission test of 200 marks. There are 20 multiple choice questions with 20 marks in total and the descriptive section constitute a total of 180 marks. In the descriptive section, there are multiple questions related to current national and the international affairs. The descriptive section also includes News making from a given passage.

After qualifying the entrance test, 80 candidates are called for interview. The interview is of 45 marks while the portfolio is of 55 marks. The portfolio should ideally constitute your experience, internships, published articles, social service, extracurricular activities or achievements showing your skills. The portfolio is a major section and one needs to work in advance to build a good portfolio.

This year the entrance is on 25 April, 2018 from 9 AM to 12 PM. The list of person called for interview would be declared on 25 May, 2018. The interviews would be conducted between 25 June and 27 June, 2018. The rank of the candidates would be declared between 30 June and 7 July, 2018.

Fees

The two year Masters programme is self financed. In the first year one has to pay Rs. 86,220/, while in the second year one needs to pay Rs. 73,820/-.

The candidates are expected to be creative, hard working and follow the deadlines throughout the course.  The course is based on teaching as well as productions which require a strict schedule and fair commitment towards the course.
