Guide to admission in M.A. Development Communication in Jamia Millia Islamia

MA Development Communication was started in 2002 as a diploma course under Ajmal Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Centre. Due to its overwhelming response and considerate demand by the development Practitioners in 2013 the course was expanded to develop into a full time Master Degree Programme.
The course aims to produce development professionals that works as a catalyst in the development process for social change.The course attempts to train students in Development Journalism, designing social campaigns, making documentary films, communicating through traditional media and social media for making effective Behaviour Change Communication on the social issues prevalent worldwide and in India.

Seats and Reservations

There are 20 seats in the programme. 50 % of the total seats are reserved for Muslim minorities i.e. 10 seats are for the General category, 6 seats are for the Muslim Category, 2 seats for Muslim Women and 2 for Muslim OBC and ST. There is a separate reservation of 2 seats each for the Kashmiri Migrants and the candidates from Jammu & Kashmir.

Who can apply?

The Eligibility criteria for candidates to apply is graduation in any discipline with at least 50% marks in aggregate.
Scheme of Entrance Exam

Entrance Scheme and Portfolio

The Admission test/ entrance is of 200 marks out of which 20 marks are MCQs for 20 question each carrying one mark and 180 marks are for descriptive questions.The descriptive session is set to test a candidate’s understanding of what Development Communication means to them, it also includes questions related to social issues and current scenario, a question for the same can be ask through a photo which the candidate has to explain. The descriptive session also includes one question on campaign designing for some social issues.
The selected candidates from the admission test will be called for an interview. The candidates are expected to carry a portfolio which can include the work of the candidate done at graduation level- internships, photos, published articles, social services, awards and achievements, write-ups, and production links or any other creative work showcasing a candidate’s skills. Interview carries 45 marks and Portfolio carries 55 marks hence, it’s a major component one should adhere to build the portfolio well in advance.

Fees Structure

The fees for the first year is Rs. 70,020/ and for the second year is Rs. 57,620/-.
Students from the previous batches of Development Communication are working with leading NGO’s different Ministries of India, Swach Bharat Abhiyan, and Election Commission of India.
The course requires a strong commitment, dedication, and enthusiasm and leadership qualities. Students have to be creative in their approach and are expected to work in teams.
