Thousands of student activists participated in a ‘Chalo Delhi’ rally demanding action in the suicide case of Rohith Vemula

A huge protest demanding justice for Rohith Vermula took place at Jantar Mantar today, 23 February. Student activists from almost all organization except ABVP held the protest rally, while thousands of student activists from likes of JNU, Patna University, Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia participated in it to raise a voice against Dalit student from Hyderabad University Rohith Vermula’s suicide and to demand release of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar. The incident happened at around 11 am. The protest march started from Ambedkar Bhawan and took a stop at Jantar Mantar, where it was joined by Congress VP Rahul Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Rohith’s family. Social activists Kavita Krishnan and Medha Patkar also lent their support to the case by being present at the spot.CPI leader D. Raja also participated in the protest.

Taking a dig at the Central government, Rahul Gandhi said that Rohith spoke about future of India but RSS only wants to talk about the past. He said that the country needs a law that doesn’t curb a student’s voice. AAP leader Kejriwal challenged prime minister Modi by saying “Modiji students se pange mat lena”, because they can shake you off your chair if they got onto it.

Posters filled up the protest with slogans supporting Rohith, like “Rohit amar rahe”. There were also posters degrading Smriti Irani with posters that contained slogans like “Jhooth ki rani, Smriti Irani”.
