Rohith Vemula Case: Candle light march at India Gate stopped by police

A candle-light solidarity march was organized today at India Gate under the banner of Joint Action Committee for Social Justice to protest against the institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit student from University of Hyderabad, which was met by police, who forcibly tried to stop them. A hundred protestors were detained at Parliament Street. They were taken to Tilak Marg police station, who were released an hour later on bail.

The protesters had not taken official permission to conduct the march. This was quoted by a senior police official as the reason behind police intervention.

All around India, students, political parties and leaders and other people are taking part in protests demanding justice for the victim. Rohith had committed suicide after he, along with four other Dalit students, was expelled from hostel.

While political leaders like CPI MP D. Raja is supporting the protest, no stir is visible from the government’s side.
