Reasons why just 10% universities in India offer music courses

A land could be considered blessed when it has a  number of genres of music within its boundaries and undoubtedly we  could say that our country India is indeed blessed with music varying from Carnatic in the south to Hindustani in the north as two broad sects apart from which there are innumerable sources, tradition and forms of music in different parts of the state. So yes we are musically rich with stars in the same too who had gained popularity within the country and across the globe.

But lets take a closer look into it . Where does this magic called music lies as a subject in our academics. Well, we all love to hear music but when it comes to pursuing it as a field of studies we are the opposites , resulting in just 10% universities in India which offer direct music courses.
Here is what a study conducted by D.V.K Vasudevan,Mysore Manjunath and Ganesh Mahidhara from University of Mysuru says:
                 1. 43% of top universities in the world offers music courses.
                 2. only 2% out of top 10 Indian universities have the PROPER MUSIC DEPARTMENTS
                 3. 3.1% of the music departments in India are currently operational.
                 4. India ranks THE LOWEST AT 20% among countries offering direct music courses.
                 5. slash in budget allocation for premier autonomous arts institutions to a paltry Rs 55cr in 2015-2016.
                 6. music departments are unable to provide professionals specialized in areas inter
                     disciplinary to music,
The study established the dismal state music education in Indian universities and compared the curricular system of developed countries such as USA, CANADA ,AUSTRALIA, UK and GERMANY with that of Indian universities were found lacking on various parameters .
So, there goes the research statement which clearly shows the stereotyped mentality of the Indian parents, teachers, students and the educational institutions.  There’s a need to travel a way more when it comes to exploring opportunities in  the field of career. Its very important to explore almost all the fields of interest and go according to what your interest says rather than what your societies interest pressures . Our society has been always confined to the so called ‘professional’ ideas of career which includes just the medical sciences or the field of engineering or may be the business side or the law side at the least but seldom do they realize that there is  an ocean of opportunities according to your interest outside this “professional” world !
” PEOPLE HAVE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE IN MUSIC IN INDIA. WE HAVE FORGOTTEN THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC EDUCATION AND THEREFORE, HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DEVELOP RESEARCH HUBS AND PROVIDE BILATERAL EDUCATION IN MUSIC ALONG WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES”- says Mr.Vasudevan.
Music is an ocean of knowledge entertainment and maths and it is high to break the stereotypes from the society and pursue your interest. There are ways and opportunities in every field of interest what we have to to is to excel in the field and without any doubt you’re gonna achieve the highest profit of your interest .!
