PM Modi’s Jamia visit sparks controversy

A sensational atmosphere prevailed in Jamia Millia Islamia campus after the news of PM Modi’s visit to the varsity. He is being invited to the annual convocation as reported by the TOI. Though, he has not accepted the invite yet. It is an immense pleasure that the students are going to be awarded degrees by the honourable prime minister of the country. The dignity of his position is respected, but there’s something more to it. What angers the students is that not many years have passed that he spewed venom against the same university which is inviting him. It was while he was addressing a gathering in Gujarat after the Batla House encounter of 2008 he said, “There is a university in Delhi called Jamia Millia Islamia. It has publicly announced that it will foot the legal fee of terrorists involved in act. Go drown yourself.” Furthermore, he said “This Jamia Millia is being run on government money and it is daring to spend money on lawyers to get terrorists out of jail.” When the then VC of the university Mr. Mushirul Hasan had assured legal aid to students suspected of terror activities, Mr. Modi was recorded saying the above statements.

Asad Ashraf, journalist with Tehelka and an ex Jamia student says “It is ironical to know that the man who termed Jamia as a breeding hub of terrorism is being invited as the Chief Guest for annual convocation. We as former students of Jamia condemn this in strongest words. He further has has refused to recive degree if it is conferred by the PM

The propagator of non violence, Mahatma Gandhi had played the role of catalyst in laying the foundation of this very university which had once being badmouthed about by the current Prime Minister of the nation. It would be interesting to see whether our honourable Prime Minister accepts the invite to confer degrees upon the students of the university which in his own words is ‘breeding ground for terrorists’.

“It is very immoral to raise fingers at an educational institution, the PM should take back his statement”, says Sandeep,a Student of Jamia.
