NET NEUTRALITY

Internet, do you consider it as a luxury or a utility? Well, if you are using internet on your system or your smartphone, using it for entertainment or for work purpose, using it to get directions or to book tickets, using it for checking out friends’ updates or to mail an important file, we all are attached and dependent on Internet today. There is no denying to the fact that we live in a world where we need internet as much as we need other things to stay connected and updated.

But there is a major crisis situation hovering over internet users. The TRAI or Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has decided to work out something which is Consultation Paper on Regulatory Framework for Over-the-top (OTT) services which is actually going to categorise the internet usage into some fixed pockets and the user will have to pay differently to avail the access to all of those as per his or her requirement. This in short would mean that if you want to use Facebook or any such social website you will have to buy social media internet pack and if you are willing to surf some e-commerce site then you will have to buy a separate pack for the same, which will ultimately put a huge pressure on the pockets of the users. Also, what we need to assert in a democratic country like ours is NET NEUTRALITY. This Net neutrality (also network neutrality, Internet neutrality, or net equality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication. Many developed countries have already adopted this including United States, United Kingdom and Japan. In India, we do need net neutrality because it will not be feasible to pay huge sum of money for a necessity like Internet.
