What is NTSE and who can apply for it?

NTSE stands for National Talent Search Examination. It is anational level exam to grant monthly scholarship to the students of class 10th. The conducting body of this prestigious exam is National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). NCERT launched their primary scheme in the year 1963 with the intent to hunt down the talented students and encourage them for their future. NTSE identifies students from the areas of study like Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Sciences and Law. It provides financial aid to the deserving students by providing them monthly scholarship.

NTSE 2018: Important updates

NTSE is a two-stage exam where candidates are tested for their academic talent. Stage 1 of this exam is organised by theStates/UTs and stage 2 of this exam is organised by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) at the national level. NTSE Application Form is already available starting from 14th August, 2017 and will last till 25th September, 2017. The date of examination for stage 1 (State level exam) are November 4 and 5, 2017 and the stage 2 (National level) will be conducted on May 13, 2018. The last date to apply for NTSE varies for all states/UTs.  The objective behind this exam is to test candidates’ Mental Ability, Scholastic Ability and Language Ability. NTSE stage 1 and stage 2 will be conducted in offline mode only

For how long the NTSE scholarship scheme is valid for the candidates?
The qualifying candidates will be awarded the scholarship for 10th and 12th class and also for their PG and Ph.D. studies depending on their stream.

NTSE 2018 Reservation Criteria

NCERT, the conducting body has set a reservation quota for some categories as mentioned below –

What should you expect in the examination?

The respective states and UTs will organise the stage 1 exam of NTSE 2018. The date of examination for the states Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Andaman and Nicobar Islandis 4th November2017. And for all other states and Union Territories is 5th November 2017. The nature of NTSE is objective type only. There will be three tests organised for stage 1 and stage 2 exam of NTSE 2018.

  1. Mental Ability Test (MAT) – 50 Questions
  2. Language Test (LT) – 50 Questions
  3. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) – 100 Questions
  • Mental Ability Test (MAT) –A total of 50 objective type questions for one mark each will be there in this section. The maximum time allotted to attempt this section will be 45 minutes. Topics such as analogies, series, problem solving, reasoning, classification, figures, coding words, etc will be covered. It tests the candidate’s ability to solve a problem and reasoning.
  • Language Aptitude Test (LAT) – In this section, a total of 50 objective type questions for one mark each will be there. It will comprise of questions from either English or Hindi as selected by the candidate during the time of application. Time duration for this section will be 45 minutes.
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) – This section comprises of 100 questions carrying one mark each. This section of the exam NTSE will be a scholastic aptitude test. There will be questions from the topics such as Science, Mathematics, history, geography, political science and economics.

*Note: For stage 2 also same NTSE 2018 exam pattern mentioned above will be followed.

Stage 1 has no negative marking criteria but in stage 2 there will be negative marking of 1/3 marks for each wrong answer. The final score will be evaluated according to this pattern only.

NTSE Syllabus 2018

There are no prescribed topics provided by NCERT for NTSE. However, as observed in previous year papers, the candidates must prepare questions based on topics such as Science, Social Science and Mathematics. NTSE stage 1 exam will have questions from class 9 and class 10 levels and NTSE stage 2 exam will have questions from NCERT syllabus of class 10thonly. Candidates can refer to the syllabus of class 9thand class 10th for NTSE stage 1 (state level exam) and they can refer to class 10thNCERT syllabus for NTSE stage 2 (national level exam) 2018.

A lot of practise is required before appearing for NTSE national level examination. Candidates must regularly solve sample papers and previous year questions. Those appearing for the state level exam of NTSE 2018 can download the sample papers from the official website of NTSE. The sample paper of NTSE 2018 mentions the paper pattern and the type of questions that can appear in the exam. Candidates should thoroughly go through all the sample papers. By the help of sample papers the candidates can have an idea about the type of questions they have to practise and the pattern of paper they can come across while solving the actual paper.

How are results declared?

NTSE results are announced online andno postal communication is made with the candidates. The results are displayed in the form of a scorecard only.  NTSE 2018 stage 1 result is announced by the respective states and UTs.NTSE result 2018 for stage 1 exam is announced separately for each conducting state or UT within a month after the conduct of exam.

Candidates can login through the official websiteto check their NTSE Result 2018. Login details required will be candidates’ registration number and date of birth to check their result for NTSE 2018 stage 1 exam. The candidates who qualify the stage 1 exam can appear for the national level stage 2 exam of NTSE 2018.After the stage 2 exam, a merit list will be prepared of the qualifying candidates and the result of stage 2 exam of NTSE will also be announced in online mode only. Candidates who will qualify both the stages of NTSE 2018 exam will be awarded monthly scholarships.

What to expect after NTSE Result?

After the final result is announced by NCERT, the qualified students are rewarded with monthly scholarships for their future studies. Different amount of scholarship money is provided according to the level of education. Financial aid is provided to students of 11th and 12th class and the students pursuing their Post Graduation and Ph.D. programs.
