Myths about Home Science

A relative asked me about the course in which I was pursuing my graduation. I replied I was doing B.Sc. OHH!! Well, well, he raised an eyebrow in appreciation. And then I completed my sentence by saying B.Sc in Home Science. And then began a number of questions. He looked at me as if he was laughing at me: “Why Home Science? You had scored so well in your board exams. Then why did you choose this kind of subject? Are you not into studies? Do u want to be a housewife in your future? You only have to cook food in that, right?” I said no, you are wrong. Home Science is more than what we all think about it. It is not a practice of being a better house wife, rather it is a more career-oriented discipline. And cooking food is just a small part of one branch of Home Science among over all 5 branches. The other branches being food and Nutrition, Human Development, Textile and Fabric Science, Resource Management and Communications and Extension.

In FOOD AND NUTRITION we learn about the different aspects of food, that mainly include the nutrients in our daily diet. It tells us about the food in context of our health. We learn how to prepare food in a way so that we can enhance its taste and health simultaneously. After reading this subject we can actually embellish our experience of fooding.

Coming to the second branch, that is HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, which talks about the different phases of human life. It includes Sociology and Psychology as a part of it, in which we can study a human mind with merely some observations. In Human Development, we study about the problems we all face in these different phases of life and try to get a solution for it.

Third branch of Home Science is TEXTILE AND FABRIC SCIENCE. This deals with the science behind the making of cloth we wear everyday. From smallest unit of textile that is fiber to the stitched cloth, we read about the every single aspect of our clothing, whether they are the designs and patterns of interlacement or about the trendy fashion in clothing world.

Our fourth branch is RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, in which we learn the methods of managing our time, energy, money and many other things. We also learn about the national economy and the architectural management of our house with space planning. We can learn about managing various resources, whether they are natural or man-made.

And last but not the least, the fifth branch, that is COMMUNICATION AND EXTENSION, talks about our communication behaviour in daily life and on special events. From intrapersonal to mass communication, we study about our perceptions and the way we communicate with different people.

Hence, Home Science is not just a subject in which girls are taught be a better house maker. We could choose different career options and be different professionals like dietician, researcher in many fields, counsellor, lecturer or teacher, health expert, journalist, physiotherapist, psychologist and the list is so on.

It’s better to be informed than to pass wrong judgements, after all.
