LOK SABHA TAKEN UP THE BILL OF IIIT

The members of the Lok Sabha from across the political spectrum welcomed the move when a bill to bring to the four institutes of information technology under the ambit of single authority was made on 25th November 2014.

On moving the bill of Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) , 2014 for consideration, the HRD minister, Smriti Irani said that its passage would help realize  prime minister Narendra Modi’s dream of digital India .

The four institutes are IIIT-Allahabad, IIIT-Gwalior, IIIT Design and Manufacturing Jabalpur and IIIT Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram.

The bill said that to declare the IIITs as the institutions of national importance was being initiated with a view to provide manpower of global standards for the information technology industry.

Though these Institutes receive grants-in-aid from the government are fully funded by the Central Government but still they do not enjoy statutory status as the Indian Institute of Technology does. During the 11th plan period these institutes were sanctioned Rs 649.86Crore to meet their recurring and non-recurring expenditure.

The Smriti Irani also said that once the bill will be passed, then these institutions will enjoy the independent status with uniform policy framework. It will allow their students to get degrees. She also added saying that these institutes helps in creating manpower by educating people.

The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the previous session in August. It was originally introduced in 2013, but lapsed with the 15th Lok Sabha as it could not be passed by the previous government.
