JNU Suspension Case: Pay the fine and continue with registration process – HC to Students

Hearing the writ petition filed by four students of JNU, the High Court on Thursday told the students to proceed with the formalities of registration for the next semester after paying the fine of ₹10,000 imposed by JNU administration on them. Justice Indermeet Kaur further called for final enquiry report from Chief Proctor regarding the incident that took place last year where a group of students ‘allegedly’ disrupted the academic council meeting.

The group that ‘allegedly’ disrupted the academic meeting includes – Mulayam Singh, Shakeel Anjum, Dilip Kumar and Prashant Kumar. The four of them were charged with fine and punishment after the incident. They choose to move to HC after Chief Proctor’s order of July 13 which disallowed them to register for the next semester apart from halting library facilities and stopping of scholarships. The report accused them of Raising slogans and forcible entry into the academic council meet, disrupting the proceedings of the meeting.
According to Students, JNU Vice Chancellor rejected their appeal against chief Proctor’s report and hence they are left with no other option except to move to High Court. Four of them represented by Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves challenge the decision on the ground that they come from a poor family and they don’t have the means to pay the fine. The plea filed by the students further states the order disallowing them to registeration is ‘unprecedented’ as students who did not pay the fine have always been allowed to register.
