JNU Entrance Exam to be shifted from May-June to December

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has finally came out with a notification which states that entrance exams for all courses will be conducted in December instead of usual period i.e., May and June. The JNU entrance exam for admissions 2018 will be conducted in December this year.

The announcement was made by JNU through a notification published on the website. This year the entrance exam for various programs including MPhil and PhD courses commenced on May 16 and continued until May 19. The admissions based on the results of the entrance exam are due in coming months. The announcement was expected to be made by JNU from quite sometimes.

Implementation of earlier Decision

The Vice-Chancellor of JNU M. Jagadesh Kumar told media that the announcement was an implementation of the decision taken at the Meeting of University’s Academic Council (UAC) two years back. The decision was approved by the standing committee meeting and was put on hold for feasibility analysis.

Two years back a proposal was made at UAC meeting of JNU and from then onwards the change of dates for entrance exam has been making rounds among the candidates. Reactions from candidates are yet to be recorded on this announcement.

Committee formed
The Vice-chancellor (VC) of JNU also announced that a working committee has also been constituted to look into the modalities of conducting exam in December from this year.

He also said that the university was trying to fill all vacancies available with faculties in M. Phil and Ph.D courses in December. The university has asked centers to list out the vacancies with each teacher. The information is expected to be put on prospectus once all the centers list out there vacancies and forward it to JNU.

More clarification after admissions
More clarifications on the shift of exam date would be obtained once the working committee submits its reports. Since the authorities are occupied with this year’s admission process they are expected to indulge in the exam shift procedure once the admission process for this year is concluded.

Students of JNU would not be at surprised provided the fact that the decision was making the rounds from past two years. Teachers said that students might not have any problem with the date shift as there is no big structural change in that.

No, changes have been announced in the exam pattern or syllabus so far. Students preparing for JNU 2018 entrance exam should now be having just 6 months of time to prepare as compared to 12 months for 2017 aspirants. JNU has always been one of the favorite destinations for students not only from India but also from foreign countries (from SAARC countries).

It would be interesting to see how universities adjust to their final semester exams as many universities across India schedule their Odd semester exam in the months of December. For students of these universities, it would be a difficult task to comply with both exams at the same time. For the time being, it’s better to wait and watch how JNU implements this decision.
