ISL’s Top Five Indians

While the marquee players have hogged the limelight in the inaugural edition of Indian Super League, some Indian players too have established themselves to be equally praise-worthy. Here’s a look at our Top 5 Indian players :

1. TP Rehenesh – NorthEast United FC
The 21 year-old Goalkeeper is strong as a brick wall between the sticks and has been quite efficient barring his first match where his mistakes cost NorthEast FC. Keeping world cup holder Alexandros Tzorvas out on the bench is not an easy task but Rehenesh has managed just that with a string of impressive performances particularly against Delhi Dynamos and FC Pune City. A front runner for the Golden Glove award, Rehenesh can aptly replace the great Subrata Paul in the coming years if he carries on with this form.

2. Arnab Mondal – Atletico de Kolkata
It’s fair to say that Arnab Mondal has been one of the unsung heroes of the ISL so far. You want consistency and assurance from your center back and Mondal has definitely delivered on both fronts. The 25 year-old has formed a great partnership with Josemi in the defense and is great off the ball too. Pitted against greats such as Elano and Alessandro Del Piero, Mondal put up a great fight and rightly deserves the applause.

3. Subash Singh – Mumbai City FC
Although the Forward who plies his trade for the Mumbai outfit has largely been overshadowed by the legendary Nicolas Anelka, he has not failed to make a mark. He scored one in Mumbai’s 5-0 romp over FC Pune City and provided Anelka with the assist in their 1-0 win over the Delhi Dynamos. He’s been more than a handful with his pace and stamina and if he improves his finishing, he could very well be India’s find of the tournament.

4. Israil Gurung – FC Pune City
Gurung has been deployed as a Right winger and plays his part to perfection – be it on the offensive or defensive. His tireless work up and down his flank has been unrivaled. With the presence of players like David Trezeguet and Kostas Katsouranis in the team, there’s plenty of options in the box to provide to. And he does just that. He’s also shown great pace and that only adds to his credentials.

5. Denson Devadas – Chennaiyin FC
With Bojan Djordjic more of a ball playing distributor, the onus has been on Devadas to do the dirty work and break up the opposition’s play. He’s done that efficiently, especially against the likes of Robert Pires and Borja Fernandez as he nibbled at their heels persistently, often conceding a free-kick for the greater good.
He has however, lunged needlessly into challenges and his passing has been far from accurate so there’s definite room for improvement despite his solid defensive displays.
