IIT Bombay organized free Eye-Test camp

IIT Bombay,Mumbai:

Perceiving its social responsibility, AZeotropy, the annual Chemical Engineering Symposium of IIT Bombay is doing its chunk of public welfare through its insightful social campaign “i-CARE”. Aimed to spread awareness and reduce the prevalence of “Corneal Ulcer”, a widespread yet ignored eye disease, this initiative has already caught pace. AZeotropy has done on-ground awareness campaigns in 7 colleges, and via the social media. Regarding the same an Eye-Test camp was organized on Feb 14th in collaboration with National Social Service, IIT Bombay. Though open for all, the camp was intended for the underprivileged construction workers, mess workers and labourers in the campus who could not have afforded the check-up otherwise. Vision Foundation, being the medical associate provided the doctors and required facilities.With more than 170 people being analyzed in the 4.5 hour time bracket, the camp can certainly be called a success. Among these 10 were given eye drops on the spot and 22 were prescribed of Infection and visual ailments, moreover a few others were given appointment of Doctors of Bombay City Eye Institute & Research Centre.People said very touching words and blessed the team for their small contribution to humanity.The doctors too were overwhelmed by the response received from these workers.As an attempt to raise the awareness of the disregarded disease here are a few stats about Corneal Ulcer:1

 

According to the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB), approximately 1.5 – 2 million people develop corneal ulcer annually in India which is 30 times the number of corneal ulcers seen in theUS. The World Health Organization has recognized that corneal blindness resulting from corneal ulcer is emerging as an important cause of visual disability.Studies show that lack of proper eye care and excessive usage of electronic gadgets have made urban areas more prone to corneal ulcers. Nearly 70% cases of corneal ulcer are from urban areas.
