Guide to admission in 3-year Diploma course in theatre at National School of Drama (NSD)

The National School of Drama is one of the most reputed and foremost theatre training institutes in India and is well acknowledged in the whole wide world. In 1959 National School of drama was set up by Sangeet NatyaAkademi and later in 1975 NSD became an independent entity of its own. NSD offers a three-year full-time diploma course for students aiming to make a career for themselves in theatre.

National School of Drama is well reputed and the course offers and progresses through various workshops, classes, modules, practical and theoretical syllabus planned with rigorous training for theatrical minds at best. It is one of the most prestigious theatre institutes in the world. Apart from all the training and syllabus, students are required to produce their theatre plays which are then performed to live public.

Seats and Reservations

There are 26 seats available in the course and out of the 4 seats are reserved for SC,1 seat for ST, and 5 for OBC (non-creamy) candidates who preferably belong to the performing arts background.

Who can apply?

The eligibility for the course requires graduation in any subject from a recognized university in India or abroad, along with working knowledge of Hindi and English. The course also requires participation in six productions of theatre plays. Recommendation letters from three theatre experts and documentary proof of the theatre productions.

Age Limit

The age limit required for the eligibility for the course is a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 30 years.

Process of Entrance Exam

The process of admission for NSD is conducted in stages, the primary stage is the aptitude test that is conducted in a written format, it is to judge a candidates aptitude and acting skills. Then the shortlisted candidates will be attending a 4-5 days workshop conducted inside the campus premises. The selected candidates than would have to undergo a physical fitness test organized by NSD. The final selection is done upon the candidate’s performance in the aptitude test and workshop. All the selected candidates would be granted a scholarship of Rs 6000 per month. The application process begins in the second week of March and closes by the end of April. The aptitude tets happens in May every year.

Fees

The fee structure for the three-year diploma course is Rs 8,500 per year.
