GRE, SAT, GMAT Scores Mandatory for NRI Admissions to Panjab University

Panjab University, Chandigarh is one of the most sort after universities for students both from India and abroad to pursue their college education. Every year new guidelines are set for admission through NRI quota to all the UG/PG courses. This year, scores in competitive examinations like GRE, SAT, GMAT have been made compulsory for NRI students to secure admission.

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is taken for admission into technical undergraduate courses. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is for applying to Post-Graduation courses while for management courses like MBA, the scores of Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) will be considered.

Every year 10% of the total seats in each course is reserved for NRI admission. Candidates who wish to apply under NRI quota, must submit certificates of academic qualifications as proof of passing the qualifying examination. Till last year, entrance tests were conducted for NRI candidates. However, starting this year, admission will be done through scores obtained in GRE, SAT & GMAT 2018.

Guidelines for admissions are set by the admission committee in a meeting, conducted every year, before the start of admission process. In last year meeting, a new rule was set for admission, according to which, children of Indian origin or overseas citizens of India are eligible for admission under NRI quota, provided that they have resided in a country other than India for a minimum period of 3-years preceding the year of admission into Panjab University.

This rule resulted in decline in the number of students joining the University, under NRI quota. The number of students joining through NRI quota was 41 in 2016-2017. It reduced to just 17 in 2017-2018.

The rule also had an impact on the University rankings. This made the admission committee to convene a meeting last December, to scrap the above rule and re-establish the rules of 2016-2017 for the time being.

The new rules will come into effect once they are approved by the admission committee and Senate.
