EDUCATION FOR ALL!! IGNOU announces fee waiver for its trans gender students.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on Monday announced fee waiver for its trans gender students of all programmes.
Vice Chancellor Ravindra Kumar announced this great move during the 22nd Prof G Ram Reddy Lecture.

It was a welcome move by one of the largest university of India. In a world where trans genders are gaining acceptance in the society, free graduation education to them is another move towards equality and betterment of society.

“The government should give freedom and spend 6 per cent of the GDP on education. Main thrust should be to devise effective strategies to address the challenges to the growth of education in India and to realize the potential of the country’s demographic dividend as envisaged in the national education policy of 2016,” said Vaikuntham.

Eligibility to the exemption:

The students have to get a certificate from the central or state government or a medical officer as a proof/to be eligible for the exemption, or they can even get their Aadhar Cards.

The rule not only provides free education but also gives them an inclusive environment, to study and learn in the best environment.

According to Scroll, Rakesh Sharma, Assistant Registrar in the Vice Chancellor’s Office in IGNOU, said that many trans genders students had applied for admissions this year. But the total number is not known till now. They will know the actual number of students after the admissions are closed in August. This is not the first path-breaking move towards the transgender community by the University. They have always been inclusive. In 2012, they had added the ‘other’ gender category to their admission forms. This step was taken even before Supreme Court’s formal notice to add the ‘third gender’ status for the transgender community in 2014.

“Be the change you want to see in the world”, A perfect example of this quote is IGNOU. It is on its way to change the education system for the betterment of ‘all’.
