DU students protest to get Right to Accommodation before DU Students’ Union Election

Election season is on! Delhi University is full of posters. Candidates are campaigning here and there but in the middle of this election season a protest is going on ! Protest to get Right to Accommodation. Left backed All India Students Association( AISA) have taken the initiative to get hostels from management of DU.

A postcard campaign began this month and reached every college resulting 10,000-20,000 postcards filled by students demanding hostel from Vice Chancellor of the University.A right to accommodation march began this movement yet Vice-Chancellor remained mum.AISA unit of various colleges submitted memorandums to principals.
Hunger strik

A hunger strike followed by another March happened on 26 August and 27 August where hundreds of students participated.The hostel Satyagraha was on of its kind. Students from north and south campus colleges like  Ramjas,Deshbandhu,Miranda,Aurobindo along with off campus colleges like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee sat on Hunger Strike.Plays,songs and sloganeering along with speakers like R.K Sarin,Nandita Narain speaking on issues of the University made this movement a unique one.On day 2 the effigy burning and march marked the end of the movement.

“I am an outstation student and I understand the importance of affordable hostels for a student who is coming from far off places to study. PG rent are as high as 12-24K per month which a student from middle class n lower class cannot afford, hostel is something that should be available for an all round development of a student”, says Aditya, a member ofAISA
