Delhi High Court refuses to put off DUSU polls

Delhi University:

As the DUSU elections are approaching, the political activists of various parties are becoming active in order to gain votes from the Freshers as well as the senior students of the college. While some are campaigning in their colleges only, the others have a very tight schedule as they go and visit every college and try to win supporters.

The elections in University of Delhi are a big landmark every year, and they continue to hold their importance this year. In reply to a recent petition filed by All India Students’ Union (AISA), the Delhi High Court on  August 29,2014 has refused to stay the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. AISA alleged that the current system of allotment of ballot in which the name of the candidates appear alphabetically, which gives “unfair advantage” to those in the top of the list. According to them, the candidates with their names on the top of the lists on the EVM machines had a higher chance of winning, as the voters who do not support any specific candidate end up pressing the top-most button most of the times.

The plea to stay the elections was refused by A Division Bench comprising Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul, but was ready to hear the plea and examine the issues involved.
