BCI barricades evening law colleges: DU has been notified to exempt admissions for evening shifts for the next session

On 10th January, Sunday, the BCI (Bar Council of India- the apex regulatory body for legal education and legal profession in India) sacked the execution of colleges offering law courses in the evening shifts under Delhi University, stating the lack of proper quality education.

Earlier in 2014, BCI decided to derecognize the law course offered by DU, due to the failure in seeking timely extension of the affiliation in its three centres – Campus Law Centre, Law Centre-I and Law Centre-II. Despite granting a provisional extension of the affiliation for the session of 2014-15, after DU had proposed to shift to a new building, claiming ‘the availability of adequate space, for the faculty to function properly, a fresh inspection by the BCI panel noted that two of the law colleges had been running classes for hours extending beyond 9 P.M.

The council had levied charges, other than the fresh ones to the illegalities such as – more than permissible student strength, lack of infrastructure and faculty. Thus, resting their case, BCI has asked Delhi University to issue a notification stating that no admissions are to be made for the evening classes under law courses from the next year. BCI also asked the university to send an undertaking of compliance with rules to correct the anomalies within four weeks
