AMU walk for awareness against diabetes

ALIGARH May 16:

Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University has become the first medical college in the country to launch “e-Consultancy and Monitoring Cell for Diabetes”. This Cell will provide all necessary information and medical advice to the patients of diabetes through e-mail and telephone. For this purpose, a comprehensive database of diabetics has already been prepared.

Addressing at a seminar organized by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetics and Endocrinology, AMU, Prof. Jamal Ahmad, Director of the Centre informed that the Diabetes Monitoring Cell has been established in collaboration with the Diabetes Education and Awareness Program (DEAP), a United States based Trust formed by AMU alumni Dr. Shamsi Kohkan and Ms. Ghazala Kohkan. He said that the Rajiv Gandhi Centre has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the DEAP to this effect.

Prof. Jamal Ahmad said that AMU has become the third centre for such a Diabetes Monitoring programme after Korea and Germany.

The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah said that although a “silent killer”, diabetes can be controlled by regulated diet and regular physical workouts. He said that people who lead a disciplined life did not need to worry in this regard. He however warned that those who consumed cigarette, Gutka, wine and junk food were the softest target of this disease.

The Vice Chancellor thanked Ms. Ghazala Kohkan of DEAP for extending monetary and moral support to the diabetes awareness programme.

Ms. Ghazala Kohkan, who is the moving spirit behind this project, said that she had been motivated to launch this project in her home country after she became a victim of this disease a few years back. “In the year 2013, I lost my brother in law who died at the age of 57 after he had become a victim of this disease. The Trust, which has sponsored this programme, was a result of this cathartic experience, which I shared with some other alumni of this institution”.

Ms. Kohkan advised people to have an extensive physical exercise and used green vegetables for healthy and anti-diabetes diets.

Conducting the programme, Prof. Iqbal Pervez, Department of Zoology, highlighted the objectives and nature of work of the above Cell. He said that with the growing number of patients and limited medical resources, it was not possible to attend every diabetic patient effectively. Hence, it was thought that this one to one approach has to be replaced by “one to many at a time” approach.

Mrs. Sabiha Simi Shah, wife of AMU Vice Chancellor, distributed Glucometer to poor patients. Lt. Gen. Shah released the a booklet in Hindi and English on Diabetes Education and Awareness. Prof. Tariq Mansoor, Principal, JNMC proposed a vote of thanks.
