AMU professor presents paper in Manila

ALIGARH December 4:
Professor Sami Rafiq, Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University presented a paper “The Forbidden World of the Occult and its Impact on Literature and Culture” at the 16th Biennial Symposium on Literature and Culture in the Asia-Pacific at Manila, Philippines recently.

The conference was sponsored by The University of Philippines, De La Salle University, Manila and Ateneo de Manila.

The symposium focused on the theme of “The Forbidden” and was open to investigations specifically for the literatures, cultures and perspectives of the Asia-Pacific region. A variety of papers were presented by academics from Malaysia, Indonesia, USA, Australia, Singapore, India and the Philippines displaying a wide range of transgressions in literature and culture. The participants were enriched and enligtened by the culture, food and history of the Philippiness. An interesting theatrical performance titled “Its April, What Are We Doing Here!”, directed by Ricardo Abad was appreciated most. A book of poems “What are you doing here?” by Dennis Haskell, a prominent Australian poet and Professor Emeritus of The University of Western Australia was also relased on this occasion.

Prof. Sami Rafiq read out her English translations of the poems of Asrarul Haq Majaz. She also participated in the lively discussions on Universities in the Asia-Pacific and laid emphasis on Aligarh Muslim University as being an upcoming and prominent University in South Asia.

Dr. Lily Rose Tope of the University of Philippines was the convener of the conference.
