AMU gets a new Centre for Academic Leadership

ALIGARH October 5:
The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India has sanctioned for the establishment of the Centre for Academic Leadership and Educational Management (CALEM) at the UGC Human Resource Development Centre, Aligarh Muslim University with a non-recurring grant of Rs. 6 Crore and recurring grant of Rs. 1.4 Crore.AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah has expressed happiness on the historic development and described it as a major achievement of the Aligarh Muslim University.Brig. Syed Ahmad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor expressed hope that the CALEM will help transform the educational scenario at national level.

Professor Abdur Raheem Kidwai, Director, UGC HRDC, said that this Centre has been awarded by the Government of India under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission of Teacher Training Scheme for setting up centres of excellence at prestigious educational institutions in the country. He said that CALEM will cater to the professional development and quality education of University and College teachers all over the country, including Minority Managed Institutions.Elaborating on the objectives of the Centre, Prof. Kidwai said that the CALEM, which will be entrusted with the responsibility to organize Workshops, Short Term Courses, Skill upgradation modules for the faculty members across the country, has been sanctioned after several rounds of presentations at the HRD Ministry, New Delhi.He said that the CALEM will (bring out analytical reports about the educational issues and challenges faced by minorities. He expressed satisfaction over the recognition of the UGC HRDC as the nodal agency by HRD Ministry for taking up the task of revitalizing education.

Prof. Kidwai said that the sensitization and professional development courses of the CALEM, with special focus on women’s education and skill development, will be organized both at AMU and other leading institutions outside Aligarh. Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Assistant Professor and Assistant Director, UGC HRDC will coordinate the logistics of this ambitious project which will go a long way in improving the quality and delivery system of higher education, he added.
