AMU cancels Students’ Union elections due to participation of expelled students and criminals in the election campaign

ALIGARH September 21:
The Aligarh Muslim University has cancelled the elections to the AMU Students’ Union, including elections to the Women’s College Students’ Union and elections for student representation on AMU Court, which was scheduled for the September 26, 2016. This decision was taken this afternoon at an especially convened meeting of the University’s Executive Council.

AMU Registrar, Prof. Asfar Ali Khan, in an official notification, said that the Executive Council had taken this unanimous decision in view of the extraordinary situation, which had developed during the campaigning of the election in the past few days.

The notification mentioned that a disturbing situation had developed following the participation of expelled students, criminals and non-students in the election campaign. There were reports that contestants and their supporters had been making forcible entries with vehicles into the Women’s College and other Halls of residence and classrooms and were moving as an intimidatory motorcycle gangs on the campus.

The notification further clarified that there were also reports of blatant violation of the AMU Students’ Union Election Amended Regulations 2012, which are based on the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. Some Deans testified in the meeting that some contestants and their supporters were pressurizing them to alter the record of the attendance and took part in the acts of misbehaviour with the Deans.

The special meeting of the Executive Council also approved the AMU Vice Chancellor’s decision to expel Mudassir Yousaf, a student of M.Sc. Organic Chemistry, who had accepted to make anti-national post on a social site, recently.

Addressing a meeting of all Dean, Provosts, Wardens, Proctorial and DSW team, Vice Chancellor urged them to keep strict vigil on the campus and do not allow any illegal activity in the hostels and control the situation without using police force. He said that he had full faith in his team.

AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig. S. Ahmad Ali said that as a precautionary measure, all Provosts and wardens remain present in the Halls of residence and do not allow students to form a mob on the University campus.
