Aligarh Muslim University organized an awareness program on the occasion of World Aids Day

Residents Doctors Association (RDA) and Department of Community Medicine, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized an awareness program and a poster making competition with the theme “Close the gap”. The initiative was taken as part of the celebrations of the World Aids Day.

Prof Tariq Mansoor, Principal and CMS, JNMC inaugurated the poster making competition, in which around fifty university students participated with great enthusiasm. Prof Mansoor said that it is a great and sincere effort by the RDA and Dept of Community Medicine, which would increase public awareness especially among the youth.

Dr Tabish Khan, President, RDA said that this is an opportunity to harness the power of social change and put people first. He said that the ending of the AIDS epidemic by 2030 is possible only by closing the gap between people who have access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services and people who are being left behind. He told that closing the gap means empowering and enabling people to access the needed services.

Dr Ishtiyaq, Department of Community Medicine said that unawareness in the society regarding the status of HIV could be curbed by providing support through closing the access gap for HIV testing. He said that by closing the treatment gap, all 35 million people living with HIV could have access to life-saving medicine. He further said that closing of the gap in access to medicines for children would enable the ones living with HIV to access proper treatment as against the twenty four percent who have access today.

Another poster making competition for the age group of under 14 years was organized at the Urban Health Training Centre and was inaugurated by Dr Ather Ansari, Department of Community Medicine. The competition recorded the participation of more than fifty students of primary level.

The organizing Committee included Dr Tabish Khan, Dr Badrul Hasan and Dr Aftab from RDA and Dr Ishtiyaq and Dr Najmul Aqib from Department of Community Medicine.Mr Ameerullah and Mr Azeem Warsi from RDA also supported the cause.
