AISA joins hunger strike as the Right to Accommodation Movement enters day 50

  • 7th October , 2015

AISA joined the students Right to Accommodation movement who have been on strike for over a month. The strikers are sitting on a hunger strike since October 2nd who are demanding the implementation of section 33 of DU Act according to which DU is bound provide accommodation to every student. Also, they are demanding from the Delhi Government to come up with a Rent Regulation Act which would help controlling the soaring rents in Delhi, which makes it difficult for a student to survive here. AISA is sitting on relay hunger strike with the strikers of the movement.Less than 5 percent of students actually get hostel in Delhi University and the rest are forced to move to PGs or rooms which charge exorbitantly. Not only this but also the student has to pay a brokerage of fifty percent of the rent to the broker whose job is to only show them the vacant rooms.

The hunger strike has entered its fifth day today and we still see no response from either the DU VC or the Central and State government. Even the newly elected ABVP led DUSU has maintained a complete silence on the issue. Earlier we saw CYSS’s Vice Presidential candidates Garima Rana jumping into the movement but later with pressures from CYSS she withdrew her name from the strike.(image attached) AISA DU Unit President Aman Nawaz said that “AISA has been continuously fighting on the issue of hostels for students. Accommodation for students has been the central agenda of our campaign Our DU Our Right Our Fight. Last year more than 90 percent of students agreed that DU should provide hostels to all outstation students and also Delhi Government should bring some rent regulatory mechanism which would control the soaring rents day by day.

” Saurabh Kumar, a student of PGDAV college says “ I live in a single room since three years in Nehru Nagar. Initially my rent was 5000 Rs when I came here. Now it has gone upto 7500 per month. Now with my graduation coming to an end I will have to look for some part time job if I plan to study further.” “Hostels and accommodation for students become a hot topic for all major political parties before elections but once the elections get over no step is taken. These political parties always Co-Opt the movement of common students but take no concrete steps after winning. The ABVP led DUSU has not only remained silent on this issue but has been explicitly promoting PGs and Private Accommodations on every hoardings and billboards on the streets of DU.(images attached)” Said Aman Nawaz. AISA demands immediate response from the DU VC, and the Government in this matter
