In the recently concluded polls in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Assam and West Bengal, which elected 812 MLAs, there was a marked jump in the number of crorepati MLAs at 53 per cent, with Puducherry and Tamil Nadu topping the list at 83 per cent and 76 per cent, respectively.
According to THE TELEGRAPH the new Tamil Nadu assembly will be the richest assembly ever in the state. The House will have a record 170 crorepatis MLAs and that’s going only by assets declared in affidavits they filed with their nominations. Three MLAs, including chief minister J Jayalalithaa, have declared assets of more than 100 crore. Congress MLA from Nanguneri H Vasanthkumar has assets of 337 crore. Anna Nagar DMK MLA M K Mohan is worth 170 crore.
Assam will see a two-fold rise in elected candidates who are crorepatis. In 2011, the Assembly had 47 crorepati legislators in the 126-member House. The figure has raised to 94, going by the affidavits of the candidates who won the Assembly elections, a report compiled by Association of Democratic Reform and National Election Watch said. The report was compiled from the financial and educational backgrounds, criminal records and other details revealed by the candidates through sworn affidavits, according to the Supreme Court’s order. The results of the two-phase elections were declared yesterday. The BJP won 60 seats, the Congress 26, the AGP 14, the BPF 12, the AIUDF 13 seats and an Independent wrested one.
Of the 126 newly elected candidates, 41 were re-elected, and on an average, their total assets have increased by 86 per cent since the last time they contested. The BPF’s eight re-elected candidates had the highest surge in assets of 200 per cent (Rs 2.46 crore from 81.94 lakh in 2011).
According to the income tax returns, the state BJP’s election committee convener, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has the highest income of Rs 1.33 crore in the fiscal 2014-15. The report also revealed that 14 (11 per cent) successful candidates have criminal cases against them. Of these, 10 are accused of serious offences such as murder, attempt to murder, rape, molestation and criminal conspiracy.
As these Netas are getting richer day by day, no actions are taken against them. We are having polls, surveys even income tax report still everyone is mum. Is this not funny, that we are having evidences and still we are sitting hand in hand.
Different parties are using different techniques at different level to show from where they are getting that much of the money to spend in their rallies. Some said that they are getting donations but they are not saying why they are getting the finances, what is the motive behind that.
The parties are going at any level to get success in the elections, distributing free tea that costs Rs. 5 per cup. It requires a huge sum of money. Can an ordinary candidate do this?
Even the Aam Admi Party is no exception. It is still a mystery that from where they got such huge sum of the money to contest the Delhi election. They showed all their accounts in their website, but Rs 5 and Rs 10 cannot make it to Rs. 20 crore. As per the election commission they had not disclose source of funds properly.
Even though the election commission has fixed the maximum limit of amount to be spent in the election, no party is following it.
They BJP are spending crores but there is no one to ask from where they are getting so much of fund. If a common man raises voice against this than that voice is suppressed by the party men.
So, for a common man it is impossible to contest the election because he cannot spend that much of money in the election campaign. In such case the election commission must get strict about the findings in the elections. It should insists the political parties to provide the detail of the funding they have received on on their website and let the general public does the scrutiny of their funding. This may discourage money power playing a role in the elections. This may alone encourage the common man to get into the electoral fray and compete with the other candidates.
